The Art of Travel

For some there is no desire to see what is beyond their local river. For others the horizon is worth chasing.

Traveling can be a testing and turbulent mix of exciting highs and soul searching lows. The rewards from these experiences are often appreciated in retrospective reflection of where our adventure has taken us, physically, emotionally and sometimes spiritually.

What are the benefits of traveling overseas?

Travel increases our knwoledge of the world, or parts of it. Helping us understand alternative ways of living. Sometimes this increases our apppreciation for the safty and familiarity of our home lives. It can also present opportunities for us to learn and build confidence, as well as provide us with inspiration to make posititive changes.

What is “ going traveling” versus holidaying or vacationing?

Essentially a trip can be one or a mix of them all. You can have a holiday while “traveling” or have a bit of adventure while on vacation.

For many though “traveling” is a break of longer duration than a typical vacation. It implies a looser itinerary. A view to getting off the beaten track. Avoiding tourist traps. Seeking new experiences and an openness to enjoy the merry serendipity of being on the road.

The duration is important. Two weeks is long vacation, and usually a welcome break from our normal routines. A longer trip though can provide time to really get to know places, pursue interests and give us valuable time to focus on our own wellbeing.

How do I do it ?

Travel doesn’t just mean global adventure. It can be as easy as getting on a bus. You don’t necessarily have to go far. It’s our approach that can make or a break trip.

If you’re thinking of crossing continents, climbing mountains, swimming in the oceans or partying till 4am in the biggest cities. You need to get ready. Before you climb the mountain make sure you can manage a hill. If you want to go swim in the ocean? Check the tides. If you're going to party until 4am? Head for the clubs playing the music you love.

What will I do when I get there?

Budgets dictate itineraries. Once food, accommodation and transport is factored in, it’s a question of whatever takes your fancy? Cultural events, museums, guided tours, markets, natural history, sightseeing, walking, adventure sports, library's, sunbathing, sky-diving and everything in between.

What are the risks?

It’s important to be safe. The naive and unprepared are easy prey for cunning and dishonest scammers. But if you list every potential danger, from geo-political concerns to finding the right places to eat you will likely end up anxious rather than excited.

Research the places you want to visit. Pay attention to official advice. Use recommended up to date guide books. Ask people who have visited or who live there what is it like.

If you find planning a long stay in a far off destination is too daunting, take short breaks or holidays with some unplanned days to fill. This will help build confidence in preparing for longer adventures.

What is secret to making the most of an opportunity to travel?

In short budget, plan and prepare. This significanty increases your chances of a great time and a successful trip.

The art of travel is creating itineraries, planning routes and imagining ourselves in our dream destinations. When it finally comes together it improtant we arrive with an acceptance and respect for other people and the places.
